Everything here is done with care, and presented in a serene but contemporary setting. J. Alexanders (American), 7440 Orchard Lake Rd., West Bloomfield; 248-538-8349. Award winning menu features hardwood-grilled steaks, salmon, daily fresh seafood selections, and chicken. Well known for prime rib of beef and baby back ribs, as well as their outstanding desserts made from scratch. L & D daily. $$-$$$$.

Jeremy Restaurant & Bar (American), 1978 Cass Lake Rd, Keego Harbor; 248-681-2124. This classic restaurant offers a menu bursting with inventive appetizers, salads and entrees. Larco's Italian Grill (Italian), 6480 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield; 248-626-6969. The Larco family has been serving Italian food to Detroiters since 1950. Many of the dishes from the original Larco’s Inn are still on the menu, including all the Italian classics made from the family’s recipes. The Lark (Continental), 6430 Farmington Road, West Bloomfield; 248-661-4466.  Its Portuguese-accented, south European-style country house is charming at any time of the year, particularly in the summer because of a walled garden that feeds the eye and provides the kitchen with fresh herbs. McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, (Seafood), 2650 Coolidge Highway, Troy; 248-637-6400. They take delivery of fresh lake and sea vittles twice a day, and don't even have a freezer on the premises!! They have "snugs" - spacious booths that can comfortably seat up to seven. Mezza Mediterranean Grille (Lebanese), 4189 Orchard Lake Road (Between Lone Pine and Pontiac Trail) Orchard Lake; (248) 865-0000. Nice atmosphere, with high quality food in a good portion at reasonable prices. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees. Selection of appetizers both hot and cold, raw juice bar, full bar service. Morton’s The Steakhouse (American), 1 Towne Square, Southfield; 248-354-6006. The land of the giants – giants of commerce fill the chairs, giant lobsters glare coldly from tableside carts, giant cigars fill private humidors, and most notably, giant steaks set the standard for all other meat houses. A fine swordfish steak, and an offering of fowl share the short menu. Menu a la carte.  D daily. $$$$$.

Northern Lakes Seafood Company (Seafood), 39495 N. Woodward (Kingsley Inn), Bloomfield Hills; 248-646-7900. Thoroughly modern, with impressionistic custom "octopus" chandeliers and open food prep areas, but with traditional cues too, such as the classic lobster live tank. P.F. Chang's China Bistro (Chinese) In Somerset Collection South, 2801 W. Big Beaver (East of Birmingham), Troy; 248-816-8000. The feel is informal though the decor is elegant, from the pair of faux Ming Dynasty steeds flanking the entrance to the phalanx of repro Xi'an terra-cotta warriors inside. Although some predictable dishes are here, it's more fun to look elsewhere on the menu. L & D daily. $$$.

Ristorante Di Maria (Italian), 2080 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield; 248-851-2500. This tiny Italian eatery manages to be hip, traditional, trendy and romantic all at once. The house specialty – veal medallions stuffed with mozzarella and prosciutto in Marsala sauce is amore on a plate. Reservations a must. D daily. $$$.

Sea Grille (Seafood) 6199 Orchard Lake Rd, West Bloomfield; (248) 487-0326. The owners of Ocean Grille in downtown Birmingham moved their restaurant to West Bloomfield. Choices include cornmeal crusted pickerel, red snapper with orange-horseradish crust, as well as classics like flash-fried calamari and oysters on the half-shell. The fare goes beyond sushi and sashimi to Korean and Japanese hot pots, dumplings and noodle dishes in tiny quarters. Low-key and comfortable; less expensive than most sushi bars. L Mon-Sat. Reliable as the standing menu may be, try one of their wonderful daily specials, which tend to range globally.
